Do I need some kind of encoder? As best as I remember, only Ultimate comes with a DVD decoder. You would need to install DVD playback software. Thank you Seth. It was still worth me getting PowerDVD though as Vista's decoder can't handle DVD-VR format discs which my DVD recorder uses on DVD-RAM when recording programmes.
